At TBS, occupational health and safety is paramount for our employees and a cornerstone of our commitment to responsible business practices. We recognize that some of our operations involve inherent risks and potential for injury. However, we firmly believe that all incidents and injuries are preventable. This conviction guides our approach to managing, identifying, and rectifying any safety concerns within our work environment.
Management is guided by international best practice, adherence of UN and ILO conventions, and Indonesian law. We also have internal codes to help employees understand their responsibilities and how to stay safe. TBS works on early identification of potential health, wellness, or safety concerns so that they can be fixed before becoming a larger problem. This is done through site surveys, auditing, and employee feedback. In addition, we assess, monitor and control health risks to prevent occupational diseases among our workforce, and create community programs to tackle public health issues.
TBS consistently implements the Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) and Mining Safety Management System (MSMS) in accordance with applicable national and international standards and guidelines. The entire occupational safety and health management system has been certified and audited by external parties. The scope of the implementation of OHSMS and MSMS involves all (100%) staff, organic employees, support staff, and working partners involved in the activities of product sales/logistics and acting as part of the product distribution chain. Meanwhile, the scope of the implementation of OHSMS and MSMS includes all activities from mining entities and operations, with all employees involved. This includes, without exception, field operators, partner workers, and guests who visit operation areas.
We adhere to the following actions to ensure a robust implementation of our protocols:
- Identification of potential workplace, environmental, or quality risks and mitigation mechanisms.
- Full compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
- Continuous improvement to enhance operational performance, quality of service or goods, as well as environmental and OHS performance.
- Maintaining documented information and evaluating the effectiveness of the quality system, environment and OHS, and mining safety on a regular basis and adjusting to current conditions.
- Fulfilling safety protocols for all mining operations, including facilities, infrastructure, installations, and equipment (Sistem Pengendalian Intern Pemerintah - SPIP).
To uphold the highest standards in health and safety management, three of our subsidiaries have implemented ISO 45001:2018 in their operations.
TBS also carries out an annual OHS evaluation that assesses the performance of work safety and employee health at the company as part of monitoring OHS implementation. We will strive to achieve our goal of reducing the number of injuries and illnesses and eliminating fatality.
Keeping everyone at TBS safe requires more than well-written policies. It needs to be embedded within our culture so that each and every employee, contractor, and even supplier understands what safety means. To build this culture, we have a number of programs across our operations. These include efforts to reduce, minimize, or eliminate potential workplace hazards from noise, pollutants, toxic chemicals, and heavy equipment. We also have rigorous oversight of environmental and other performance metrics. Complementing this is our OHS Forum, where employees are encouraged to share safety information, lessons, and concerns. The Forum is open to both internal and external stakeholders.
Employees are able to utilize a number of health-related facilities such as on-site clinics, OHS first-aid facilities, and counseling services. TBS also offers an employee-centered health improvement program for all. The Company also provides ongoing training and education in health and wellness. This includes substance-abuse awareness programs, exercise and fitness classes, and training on specific work-related safety topics. All of this programming is embedded within the company’s overall OHS strategy.
